Trade union federation Cosatu on Wednesday blamed poverty for animosity towards migrant workers in South Africa.

Speaking at the University of Johannesburg on Wednesday night, Cosatu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said the staggering rate of unemployment leads to fierce competition for jobs.

He said while there was a place for migrants in South Africa, the plight of South Africans also had to be considered.

"South Africans are facing a squeeze and we must recognise [this] because if we do not we will speak academically in the boardrooms and not recognise the problem," said Vavi.
