R70 000 fine for drunk driving and speeding

By Amanda Strydom

A KwaZulu-Natal motorist has been fined R70 000 and his driver has had his licence suspended for speeding and drunk driving.

Thirty-year-old Amith Sookraj from Durban was fined R35 000 for drunk driving and failing to stop and a further R35 000 for speeding.

Sookraj was arrested early on Tuesday morning after a high speed chase on the N2 towards Amanzimtoti.

The Transport Department's Logan Maistry said: "We welcome the sentence and hope it will send a clear message to other motorists that if they commit any traffic offence at any time of day or night they will be caught and will feel the full force of the law."
