CEO 'optimistic' over BlackBerry ban

Toronto - The head of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion says he's optimistic that the company can resolve disputes with India, the United Arab Emirates and other countries over data security.

Jim Balsillie, the company's co-CEO, said the company is continuing discussions with governments and service providers in those countries. He said "they believe we have made good progress in those discussions".

Those countries have threatened to ban some BlackBerry services.

"I'm optimistic that a positive and constructive outcome can be achieved," he added.

He made the remarks during a conference call as Research in Motion Ltd announced that second-quarter earnings jumped 68% as it added new BlackBerry subscribers and beat analysts expectations at a time when many have started to write the company off.
