Johannesburg - The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) on Friday applauded M-Net for evicting a participant from its Big Brother reality show after he hit a female housemate.
"This sends a strong message to women batterers. The CGE does not condone any form of abuse or violence against women," it said in a statement.
Ugandan Hannington Kuteesa was booted out of the show on Friday after he slapped South African contestant Lerato Sengadi on Tuesday. Violence is against the show's rules.
The CGE said it would support Sengadi if she decided to lodge a criminal case against Kuteesa.
"Big Brother Africa" has 14 contestants, competing for $200 000, isolated in a Johannesburg house with cameras for 91 days.
Viewers vote to evict one of them every week.
The first Big Brother broadcast was in the Netherlands in 1999 on the Veronica TV channel. It was picked up by Germany, Portugal, USA, UK, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy the following year and became a world-wide sensation. Since then it has been a prime-time hit in almost 70 countries.
