No exam mark-up for matrics

Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Students' (Cosas) demand to increase the final examination marks of pupils by 25%, was officially rejected by the Department of Basic Education on Saturday, the SABC reported.

"We have made it clear to Cosas that it is not going to happen," education department spokesperson Hope Mokgatle said.

The department had met with Cosas on Saturday to discuss the exam recovery plan, following days of violent student protests over matric preliminary exams in the wake of the public servants' strike.

"We felt it important to take the leadership of Cosas through our recovery plan, so they understand the decision we have taken to extend hours," Mokgatle said.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshega would have a follow-up meeting with Cosas on Monday.
