Johannesburg - Two men were arrested in connection with a shooting and raping spree in Bityi on Sunday, Eastern Cape police said.
Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said four families in the area were terrorised by a group of men early on Sunday morning.
"Three men went around on horseback, kicking down doors, demanding money and shooting at people inside."
A 22-year-old man and 63-year-old woman were shot in the chest and taken to the Mthatha General Hospital in a serious condition.
A 46-year-old woman was raped in her house. The gang allegedly dragged an 18-year-old girl from her house and raped her in a nearby veld.
Small amounts of money were taken from some families.
"The men, aged 21 and 23, face charges of rape, robbery and attempted murder. We believe we'll arrest a third man soon," Fatyela said
The two were expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Monday.
